EcoKnights and Shell’s “Garbage to Garden Composting Project” Compost Bin Batch #2. Day 1: Setup

9th April 2017. Continuing from the harvest of the first batch of compost from EcoKnights and Shell’s “Garbage to Garden Composting Project” Compost Bin, I just separated out as I could, the yet to be fully composted material from the composted material. I used this as the base in the setup for batch #2 of the compost bin.

Since I was running low on dry brown leaves, I decided to add shredded office paper as a carbon source as well. Other materials I had on had included tomato plant prunnings, both stem as well as green leaves, a small quantity of dry brown leaves, kitchen waste and egg shells.

Added shredded paper and tomato stem cuttings…

Then layers of greens and browns…

Yup, that’s a bright red tomato from the tomato plant. Unfortunately the fruit flies got to it first and the fruit fly strikes were clearly seen on the tomato. This means that the eggs of the fruit flies are already inside and fruit fly larvae probably chewing the tomato from the inside out.

More greens…

Some more kitchen waste including some fish leftovers…

More green kitchen waste…

Shredded paper as carbon source…

After wetting it down…

Yet more kitchen / garden waste…

Yet more whites as browns…

 And a final wet down.
At this point, by height, the bin is less than half filled. Hafto continue another day.
